Summer School

We are glad to announce that the Department of Linguistics of the University of Vienna is organizing a Summer School dedicated to specific languages of the Eastern Silk Road, offering courses in:

  • Bactrian (Indo-European: Middle-Iranian) – Melanie Malzahn
  • Tocharian (Indo-European) – Hannes A. Fellner
  • Tangut (Sino-Tibetan) – Xun Gong
  • Gandhari (Indo-European: Middle-Indic) – Angelo Mascheroni

Participants should participate in all the courses since they are offered as a comprehensive package.

The Summer School will take place from Monday, August 19 to Friday, August 30, 2024, at the Hörsaal 1 of the Department of Linguistics of the University of Vienna, Sensengasse 3a, 1090 Vienna. Classes will be held from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. (including breaks).

This school is part of the FWF Cluster of Excellence Summer Academy 2024.

Fees and ECTS

Participation is free of charge. Successful attendance of the Summer School is equivalent to 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) points.

Accomodation

Unfortunately, we cannot provide any pre-reserved contingents for accommodation. Below you will find a list of hostels that are easily accessible by public transport and where beds should be available at the time of the summer school. We recommend booking as soon as possible after receiving the notification of acceptance since many hostels work with a dynamic price model.
